The group MIXT COMPANY, has been on the music scene with its nucleus of David, Virginia, and Letitia (La tih sha), for more than five years now. Individually, its members have many years of entertaining experience to their credit.
Virginia Lee was born way back in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. At a young age her family moved to southwestern Virginia, to the small town of Boones Mill, just south of Roanoke. Virginia's daddy raised her and five more sisters into a pickin' and singin' family bluegrass band, that entertained both locally and regionally, singing and playing at festivals, churches, and any event they could. This beginning gave Virginia the foundation for her lifelong commitment to the world of bluegrass music. She moved from Virginia down to Nashville, Tennessee in 1990. She has "paid her dues" on the Nashville music scene since then. Virginia sings lead and various harmonies in a wonderfully sweet mountain style, drawn from her background and experience. Her smooth rhythm guitar keeps the band on track. Virginia Lee has written many wonderful songs, some of which are featured on the bands programs.
Letitia is Virginia Lee's only daughter. She was born and raised in Franklin County, Virginia. She plays rhythm guitar, and sings lead and harmonies in a clear, powerful style that instantly impresses all that hear her. As Virginia's daughter, Letitia was raised in the music right from the start, and has been singing most of her life. When mother and daughter sing duets together they exhibit that classic family harmony and blend of voices that only comes with a family connection. Letitia is also a talented songwriter and often co-writes with her mother.
Dave Blood is the third member of the "MIXT", (pun intended). He was born in Georgia to a military family that finally settled in Eastern Pennsylvania. Dave was introduced to bluegrass in college, during the folk music boom of the early 'sixties, and has been hooked ever since. Dave's first group, the Cumberland Mountain Boys, was one of the only two groups in the Eastern Pennsylvania, Western New Jersey area for a long time. Dave had eight years in the U.S. Air Force, with two and a half years in Vietnam, where he continued to play his mandolin. During his tours of duty in Washington, D.C., he was exposed extensively to the early Country Gentlemen, at the legendary Shamrock Tavern, and was greatly influenced by them, and in particular, John Duffey. After getting out of the Air Force, Dave joined the group, The Mueller Brothers, moved to Nashville, and played full time for three years. A later stint as guitarist and mandolinist for the bluegrass and country comedian, Harold Morrison, and bluegrass gospel band, The Mueller Family, round out his professional credits. After hearing Virginia and Letitia perform at "The Paint Store", in Goodletsville, Tennessee, Dave said "I've got to sing with them". He did, and he's been with them ever since.
"David 'Dawghouse' Knight joined MC in the summer of '98 on the upright bass. David brings a lot of years experience to the band and his intricate bass lines and stylings provide an interesting counterpoint to their music. David was born in Puerto Rico, and with his wife and two sons, now lives in Franklin, Tennessee.
Martin O'Doherty hails from Coventry, England, though the way he picks the five-string banjo you'd think he sprang from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He joined Mixt Company early in 1999 and provides an important part of the band's sound. He is now a confirmed Nashvillian, and dedicated band member."
Together, MIXT COMPANY produces a magical blend of voices and music, and their desire is to provide a high quality bluegrass sound to entertain the public. They expect to be around for a long time, singing and playing for audiences everywhere!!!
Dave Blood and Virginia Lee were married New Years Eve 2000.
Hey Dave & Virginia,
"Many thanks for sending us a copy of your band's new release which, like your debut, I enjoyed very much. And I think "A Personal Touch" is even better -- the band is tighter and the songs just can't be beat. Virginia has written several killer numbers -- I really like "Less Traveled Road" and the band does a fine job on "Listen, Listen" (a chilling number), "If It's Just A Cabin" and "Train Of Heartache." Congratulations (once again) on a bluegrassical outing well done. I'll do my best to help spread the word."

"As someone who grew up far from country music and came to it only
recently, I always believed that most of it -- most of it made after 1960, at least -- was overproduced and undertalented. But Mixt Company shows that modern country can still be what old-time music was and what real hand-made country music must be: relevant storytelling and musicmaking that describes people's lives and tribulations, and touches them in ways they need, more than ever, to be touched."
